Hauting Characteristics

Based on our collected incident reports, we have noted that the circumstances surrounding the haunting are generally reflective of a traditional poltergeist-type haunting. However, specific details tend to vary from your run-of-the-mill poltergeist: Only one of our collected accounts documents the typical possessed household objects which typically characterize such a haunting. Rather, victims are typically assailed with stones, but few seem to have had any paranormal experiences in the area prior to the attack. These accounts also largely come from visitors to the town, and not Woodstock natives, possibly implying that the entity responsible for the activity is attempting to ward of unwelcome or encroaching individuals from the area. These accounts also typically take place in the middle of the night, typically after midnight but before dawn.

Though our few scattered reports imply that this haunting is an irregular affair, we cannot discount the possibility that the haunting is actually much more frequent than these accounts would imply, and that we are simply working with incomplete information. Given the longstanding persistence of this haunting, we generally assume this to be the case, although there is still a possibility that the haunting is as irregular as our records would imply.

Furthermore, no specific location seems to serve as the epicenter of this haunting. Multiple different locations are described as the site of these attacks, both domestic and exterior, and though multiple accounts seemingly reference Roseland as the explicit site of these hauntings, it is also highly possible that, as one of the major landmarks of the area, people simply attributed their experiences to the location. Additionally, we simply do not possess enough accounts to confirm whether or not this haunting is truly localized to that location.

Current Theories

At time of publication, our general lack of information on this case has led to us having many difficulties developing strongly-reasoned theories as to the origin of this haunting.

One currently extant theory is simply that some sort of primoridial spirit haunts the Woodstock area, which may or may not have existed prior to the colonial period. This spirit seems to attack people, especially visitors to the town, at random intervals in the dead of night, generally by "throwing stones" as its primary means of injury. Accounts which may corroborate this theory have yet to be discovered or received.

Another potential theory is that a vengeful spirit of an individual executed via stoning in early colonial Woodstock (potentially one accused of witchcraft) currently haunts the region. This is currently believed to be the most likely hypothesis, given the nature of other hauntings around the New England area, and is the one most readily accepted by C.A.H.I.S since it pertains closest to our area of expertise. This would explain multiple facets of the account: The wandering nature of the haunting, due to the individual's likely ostracization from their community; these attacks generally ocurring during the "witching hours"; and the violent nature of the haunting.

Further research is necessary to confirm or discredit any of these theories

Moving Forward

This website was launched in the hope that it might reach other people affected by this particular haunting: please contact us if such is the case.

We are currently planning on dispatching investigators to the Woodstock area, once other local projects have been completed. At the moment, however, there is currently no investigation present in Woodstock.
